The Four Gorilla Trekking Sectors in Bwindi

Rushaga Sector (South)

This is where I trekked, and it was nothing short of magical. The experience changed many of us forever. A moment with the gorillas felt like finally meeting an imaginary twin you always dreamed of. Unlike a typical safari, this adventure brings you face-to-face with endangered mountain gorillas, just meters away in their natural forest habitat. Located in the southern part of the park, Rushaga has the highest number of habituated gorilla families, making it one of the most accessible sectors in terms of permit availability. The terrain is steep and forested, but the reward is immense.

Gorilla families here include Nshongi, Bweza, Kahungye, Mishaya, and Busingye. Rushaga is also the only sector that offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience — a unique opportunity to spend four hours with a semi-habituated group under the guidance of researchers.

Buhoma Sector (Northwest)

Buhoma is the original and most popular trekking sector — the birthplace of gorilla tourism in Uganda. It offers gentler terrain, ideal for those looking for a less physically demanding hike. Buhoma is home to some of the most exclusive lodges and is closest to Queen Elizabeth National Park, making it easy to combine a gorilla trek with a traditional safari. Gorilla families here include Mubare, Habinyanja, and Rushegura.

Ruhija Sector (East)

Ruhija is known for being less crowded and serene, offering moderate to challenging hikes and breathtaking views. It’s also a prime destination for bird watchers. The main gorilla families in this sector are Bitukura, Oruzogo, and Kyaguliro.

Nkuringo Sector (Southwest)

Nkuringo is the most physically demanding sector due to its higher elevation, but the panoramic views across the Virunga Volcanoes and Lake Mutanda are worth every step. It’s home to the Nkuringo group, a lively family with playful juveniles.
The Trekking Experience
The day begins with an early morning briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers. Trekkers are grouped into teams of up to eight and assigned a specific gorilla family. Treks can last anywhere between 30 minutes to over 4 hours, depending on where the gorillas nested the previous night. Expect a challenging but rewarding hike through thick vegetation, muddy trails, and rugged slopes. Once your group locates the gorillas, you’ll spend one unforgettable hour observing them as they eat, groom, and interact.

No matter how many documentaries you’ve seen, nothing prepares you for the emotion of locking eyes with a silverback.

Prepare wisely: carry waterproof hiking boots and a reliable rain jacket or poncho. Wear long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt to protect against the brush. Insect repellent is essential, as are gloves for gripping vines and branches. Don’t forget a reusable water bottle, a packed lunch, and a camera (though flash photography is not allowed). A walking stick, which can be rented onsite, will come in handy on the slippery slopes.

Pro tip: hire a porter. Not only will they carry your bag and offer a steadying hand, but your support directly benefits local communities.
